Once embraced for its convenience and promise, plastic now permeates every aspect of modern life - woven into our clothing, infrastructure, healthcare, and homes. The very durability we once celebrated has become its curse, as plastic overflows from our space to conquer the natural environment.
As someone born in Java and residing in Bali, the spiritual philosophies of Animism and Hinduism shape my artistic vision. here, I see plastic as a faceless monster - twisting through rivers, choking plants, and infiltrating soil and coral. Plastic has even penetrated the structure of life itself since we can find nanoplastic particles in plant cells or animal metabolism. Just as mythical creatures like Barong and Griffins are composites of different forms, living beings too have become chimeras - organic entities fused with synthetic debris.
My work explores this fusion, featuring a sterile landscape filled with hybrid creatures, almost in perfect symbiosis with plastic. The materials used in this installation are hand carved boards made from Balinese plastic scraps. The pieces challenge the notion of art’s value, blurring the line between creation and waste.
